Much of Newfoundland and Labrador has been under wind or blizzard warnings on yesterday, December 27, and Marine Atlantic ferry service between North Sydney N.S. and Port aux Basques was cancelled.

The ferry service was advising travelers to check its website for updates on when sailings would resume, with crossings delayed until today, December 28, according to website postings as of 10:00 a.m. local time.

The spokesman for Marine Atlantic, Darrell Mercer, said in an interview the ferry had not sailed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Wednesday.

However, he added the ferry service had transported 1,773 passengers during a 24-hour period before the rough weather shut down the holiday weekend crossings.

Flurries and snow squalls combined with winds gusting to 110 km per hour in some parts of Newfoundland and Labrador were reported by Environment Canada on Wednesday.

The windchills were in the minus 20 Celsius range.
