Osijek is the 4th largest city in Croatia. Its total city area is 169 km2 (65 ml2). In 2011 it had a population of 108,050. Osijek is the largest city and economic and cultural centre of Slavonia (eastern Croatian region), as well as administrative centre of the Osijek-Baranja County. Osijek is situated on the right bank of river Drava, 25 kilometres (16 miles) upstream of its confluence with Danube, at an elevation of 94 m (308 ft).
Osijek is still a popular domestic tourist destination due to its Baroque style, vast open spaces and recreational opportunities. The major sights in the city include its main square, Trg Ante Starcevica, the promenade along Drava ("promenada"), Tvrda the 18th century Baroque citadel, and the suspension pedestrian bridge towards Baranja.
Numerous events take place in Osijek throughout the year. The major of them are May's Croatian Tambura Music Festival, attended by tambura orchestras from all over the country and Osijek Summer Nights (held during June, July and August), as well as a series of cultural and entertainment programs, accompanied by excellent fairs.
