The Solovetsky Islands (Solovki), are an archipelago located in Onega Bay of White Sea, Russia. The archipelago covers a total area of approx 347 km2 (134 ml2) and has a population of around 860 people (2010 census).
- As an administrative division, the Solovetsky Islands are incorporated as Arkhangelsk Oblast's Solovetsky District. Within the framework of municipalities, the islands are incorporated within Primorsky Municipal District as Solovetskoye Rural Settlement. The administrative center of the divisions is the Solovetsky settlement, located on the island of Bolshoy Solovetsky. Almost all of the islands' population lives in Solovetsky.
- An interesting feature of the islands is the unique stone labyrinths and other settings of stone, especially the labyrinths on the island of Bolshoi Zayatsky. Such labyrinths were common in Northern Europe, but most perished and currently Solovetsky Islands feature some of the most beautiful remaining examples.
- The islands have historically been the setting of the world-famous complex Russian Orthodox Solovetsky Monastery. It was established in the 2nd quarter of 15th century by a couple of monks from Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery. By the end of 16th century, the abbey emerged as one of the most influential religious centres and wealthiest landowners in Russia.
- In 1974, Solovetsky Islands were designated Soviet Union's architectural and historical museum and natural reserve. In 1992, the islands were inscribed on the renowned World Heritage List "as an outstanding example of a monastic settlement in the inhospitable environment of northern Europe which admirably illustrates the faith, tenacity, and enterprise of later medieval religious communities". Currently, the Solovetsky Islands are seen as one of the major tourist sites in the orbit of Russian North.
