  • pier collision/allision - 2018 (Barcelona Spain)

31 October 2018Ship Collision / Allision

On October 31, 2018, at ~ 8 am, while navigating for docking in homeport Barcelona (Spain), the cruise ferry collided with a rail-mounted gantry crane (serving container ships).

The collision resulted in hull damages (bow) and caused a serious fire on the quay. No injuries were reported. Assisted by 2 tugboats, the ferry was towed away from the crash site and berthed.

The accident was due to poor navigation and harsh weather in Barcelona Harbour, as the cruise ship was pushed off its course by high winds. Firefighters had to evacuate the area. The fire was extinguished at ~11 am. It started after the gantry crane crashed down and hit a fuel deposit on the ground. The fire affected several TEU containers (2 of which with dangerous chemicals), forcing port authorities to activate the standard emergency response plan.

The ferry was carrying 60 passengers (embarked in Genoa and disembarking in Barcelona) and had booked 115 embarking in Barcelona for Tangier (Morocco). Reportedly, two passengers (suffering panic attacks) were treated by the ship's medics.

Note: Actually, this type of marine accident is called “allision” (striking a fixed object) as opposed to “collision” (striking another vessel).
