June 2026Other IncidentsIn June 2026, MV Gemini was placed under court-ordered detention while anchored in Karystos Bay, off Evia Island (Greece). The arrest effectively suspended the company's entire 2026 cruise program, originally scheduled to start from Kusadası on May 24th. According to Greek and Turkish media reports, the ship was detained following claims by DenizBank, which sought enforcement of alleged unpaid financial obligations owed by Miray Cruises. Subsequently, other creditors also filed financial claims, including insurance providers, maritime service companies, and tugboat operators. Reports further indicated that 26 crew members remained on the ship after the detention, with concerns raised over delayed wage payments, fuel and provisions shortages, and the uncertainty surrounding the vessel's future operations. Before the arrest, MV Gemini was scheduled to operate Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea itineraries visiting destinations in Greece, Turkey, Georgia, and Russia. On May 21, 2026, the IMO (International Maritime Organization) and ILO (International Labour Organization) listed the ship as an abandoned vessel. On June 24th, the ship was towed to Eleusis (one of Athens' suburban cities) after been anchored off Evia Island since early May. |
05 September 2025Ship Collision / AllisionOn the morning of September 5, 2025, while maneuvering for berthing in Port Piraeus-Athens (Greece), the ship (operated by Miray Cruises) made contact with the pier. The collision resulted in substantial hull damage - a puncture (lengthy gash) above the waterline near the stern, impacting the vessel's seaworthiness. No injuries were reported. Piraeus Port authorities and the ship’s technicians conducted a thorough inspection and damage assessments to determine the scope of repairs required before the cruiser may resume operations. Note: Actually, this type of marine accident is called “allision” (striking a fixed object) as opposed to “collision” (striking another vessel). |
25 March 2025Fire Accident(CruiseMapper-emailed report from Julia McGregor/received March 26th, 2025) I was on the Miray Cruises [ship] Gemini and our engine caught fire. Fire and black smoke were coming out of the top and we were told to go to our muster stations. They ended up putting out the fire and we had to sail very slowly back to Athens [Piraeus] so our engine wouldn’t overheat and catch fire again. It’s now under maintenance. Note: According to the satellite-provided AIS data, the vessel was at Port Kusadasi (Turkey) on March 23rd, staying between 03:44 and 10:19 UTC. Then it concluded the current voyage, arriving in Piraeus Port on March 24th and remaining there between 06:03 and 11:18 UTC. It left Piraeus on March 25th (at 06:00 UTC) and returned back to port on March 26th (at 18:28 UTC). |
19 February 2023Other IncidentsIn the period February 19 through March 18, 2023, Miray Cruises permanently moored MV Gemini in Port Iskenderun (Turkey) to serve as a hotel ship housing mostly families who became homeless after the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake. On February 6th, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck at depth of ~18 km (11 mi) and caused damages estimated at USD 84+ billion (EUR 78,5B / ~GBP 70B). The Iskenderun-docked ship provided housing for 1056 people, including accommodations, food, beverages, 24-hour medical services, as well as supervised activities and programs for children. The ship was scheduled to restart cruise shipping operations on March 19th, out of Cesme (Turkey). |
28 February 1997Fire Accident(SuperStar Gemini) On February 28, 1997, the cruise ship suffered an engine room fire accident. The fire started soon after leaving homeport Singapore on a 3-day roundtrip voyage. The accident resulted in significant machinery damages, one crew died and nine suffered severe injuries.
