Smithsonian Journeys is reintroducing a Mississippi River itinerary to its cruise portfolio for the first time since 2019, marking its return to USA inland waterways after a pause during the pandemic.

The program, operated in partnership with American Cruise Lines/ACL, will feature a 9-day voyage aboard American Splendor, sailing from Memphis to New Orleans in March 2026.

The itinerary will include onboard commentary from noted USA presidential historian and author Doris Kearns Goodwin, aligning with the brand’s educational and enrichment-oriented approach to travel. Although limited to a single scheduled departure, a company spokesperson indicated the sailing is booking well.

This move reflects Smithsonian Journeys’ broader strategy to expand its presence in river cruising. The company continues to grow its European offerings through its existing collaboration with AmaWaterways, with over 30 departures planned for next year. Each sailing will feature two expert lecturers on board.

Smithsonian Journeys, a division of the Smithsonian Institution, has signaled a long-term commitment to cruise travel. It entered the expedition cruise segment through a 2022 partnership with Ponant and is extending its footprint with offerings in Canada, Peru, and a planned Nile River cruise in 2027 timed with a total solar eclipse.
