While bound northward from Boston toward Quebec City over the weekend on a 7-day voyage, the Zuiderdam, a HAL-Holland America Line vessel, received a distress call from the U.S. Coast Guard's Sector Boston regarding a sailing craft named Atlaya, which was taking on water off the coast, approximately 10 miles away.
The Zuiderdam, responding with navigational promptness, altered course and reached the imperiled vessel in roughly 35 minutes. The two individuals aboard were safely brought aboard the cruise ship and later transferred to a Coast Guard cutter without incident, with no injuries reported.
Having fulfilled the maritime obligation to assist those in peril at sea, the Zuiderdam resumed its course, arriving as scheduled at Portland, Maine, unperturbed in itinerary or timing.
