MSC Group expands private island portfolio with Sandy Cay development

MSC Group’s cruise division has announced the development of a new private island destination, Sandy Cay, to be introduced in 2028 alongside its existing property, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, in the Bahamas.

The project represents a further extension of the company’s portfolio of proprietary destinations, designed for guests of both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys. Sandy Cay is conceived as a smaller and more secluded complement to Ocean Cay, intended to provide a more restrained and immersive maritime environment shaped by the natural character of the region.

Formed from fine aragonite sands, noted for their brightness and purity, the island will share the same surrounding waters as Ocean Cay while operating as a distinct destination. The development has been positioned as part of a broader strategy to align shore-based experiences with onboard offerings, maintaining a consistent standard of environment, service, and design.

In parallel with the announcement, the company has outlined further enhancements to Ocean Cay. These works include the addition of new dining venues, expanded areas for recreation and relaxation, and revised beach concepts intended to accommodate both families and adult guests. Additional programming linked to marine conservation is also planned, reflecting an ongoing emphasis on environmental engagement within the destination.

Together, the introduction of Sandy Cay and the continued development of Ocean Cay indicate a coordinated approach to destination planning, with an emphasis on controlled capacity, diversification of guest experience, and the integration of natural surroundings into the broader cruise product. Guests travelling with the company’s brands are expected to gain initial access to the new island from its opening in 2028.
