Costa Cruises has unveiled a special Mediterranean itinerary centred on the total solar eclipse of August 12th, 2026, offering guests aboard Costa Pacifica the opportunity to observe the celestial event from within the path of totality in the Balearic Sea.

The cruise line has scheduled two departures for the 8-day voyage, sailing from Civitavecchia on August 8th and from Savona on August 9th. The itinerary will include calls across Italy, France and Spain before positioning the vessel in the Balearic Sea for the eclipse.

On August 12th, Costa Pacifica will navigate to a location offering unobstructed views of the phenomenon, allowing guests to observe the moon passing directly between the Earth and the sun from the open decks of the ship.

Costa Cruises stated that viewing a total solar eclipse from the path of totality at sea represents an exceptionally rare experience. The company noted that the combination of clear horizon views, open-water surroundings and the shared experience among passengers would provide a distinctive perspective on one of nature’s most remarkable events.

The voyage will feature a dedicated Sea Destination experience titled Balearic Sea – Solar Eclipse, designed specifically around the eclipse. As the ship moves into position, guests will be provided with protective viewing glasses and will receive commentary and explanations from a specialist affiliated with the Astronomical Observatory of Genoa.

The eclipse programme forms part of Costa’s broader approach to destination-focused experiences, combining navigation planning with educational content to enhance significant natural and astronomical events encountered during a voyage.

For Costa Pacifica, the sailing will place the vessel at the centre of one of the most anticipated astronomical events of 2026, offering passengers the opportunity to witness totality from a maritime setting free from land-based obstructions.
