CCL-Carnival Cruise Line has announced its 2027 deployment schedule, confirming that Carnival Freedom will replace Carnival Sunshine as the year-round ship homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, beginning in May 2027.
Under the schedule, Carnival Sunshine will continue operating from Norfolk through mid-May 2027, completing 21 cruises before being reassigned. Carnival Freedom is scheduled to arrive on May 15th, 2027, and will operate 33 cruises from Norfolk VA during the remainder of the year.
The 3000-passenger Carnival Freedom is scheduled to undergo a drydock later this year for maintenance and upgrades following a 2024 incident in which it sustained fire damage after being struck by lightning.
The fleet change prompted discussion among cruise enthusiasts, with some questioning the replacement of the larger vessel and recalling previous seasonal deployments of Carnival Magic from Norfolk.
CCL stated that the company has served Norfolk for more than two decades and was the first cruise operator to establish year-round roundtrips from Norfolk's Half Moone Cruise Center. The company indicated that Carnival Freedom would introduce its most diverse selection of itineraries from the port, including voyages to the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Eastern Caribbean, and Canada.
In a subsequent statement, CCL explained that the homeport reassignment forms part of a broader fleet deployment strategy driven by new ship deliveries beginning in 2027, scheduled drydocks, itinerary optimization, and other operational considerations. The company also highlighted that while Carnival Sunshine originally entered service in 1996 as Carnival Destiny before being extensively rebuilt and renamed in 2013, Carnival Freedom entered service in 2006, making it the newer of the two vessels.
Norfolk's cruise business is also expected to continue expanding. Alongside CCL's year-round operations, NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line is scheduled to make more than 20 port calls in 2027. According to Nauticus Deputy Director Rehn Saunders, the combined activity from CCL, NCL, and other operators is projected to bring more than half a million cruise passengers to Norfolk VA during the year, further strengthening the region's tourism economy.
