PortMiami is introducing a series of traffic management measures ahead of the 2026–2027 cruise season, including artificial intelligence-powered congestion monitoring, pilot airport shuttle services and revised directions for passengers accessing cruise terminals.
The port’s peak season will include 81 days with between 7 and 10 ships scheduled to call, increasing the need to manage traffic around the seaport and downtown Miami. The measures include passenger information videos, coordinated communications with cruise lines and transportation providers, and the deployment of public safety and law enforcement personnel at key intersections on selected dates.
PortMiami will distribute two videos, titled “Arrive at Your Embarkation Time” and “Choosing the Right Entrance”, through its social media channels and those of its partners and stakeholders. Passengers are also being reminded to arrive at their assigned embarkation times to help reduce congestion.
Passengers travelling to Cruise Terminals AA, A, B, C and D are advised to enter the port through the PortMiami Tunnel, while those heading to terminals E, F, G, J and V should use the PortMiami Bridge. Taxi drivers accessing the staging area opposite Terminal C should use the tunnel and park in Lot 1. Drivers serving the staging area opposite Terminal E should use the bridge and park in Lot 2. Rideshare operators and passenger motor carriers accessing their designated staging areas should enter through the tunnel.
The port will continue its collaboration with GridMatrix, selected for the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority’s Public Innovation Challenge pilot project, to monitor congestion using artificial intelligence-powered computer vision technology. The system is intended to help officials anticipate traffic bottlenecks and develop responses based on traffic data.
Public safety and law enforcement personnel from PortMiami, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and the City of Miami Police Department will support traffic management along Biscayne Boulevard and in surrounding downtown areas on selected dates.
As part of its efforts to improve passenger transfers, PortMiami will launch a pilot programme in October 2026 in partnership with CCL-Carnival Cruise Line, providing complimentary shuttle transfers to Miami International Airport for passengers sailing aboard Carnival Celebration on selected dates. The port will also continue Royal Caribbean Group’s complimentary airport shuttle programme for passengers sailing aboard Icon of the Seas on selected dates.
Additional measures include the use of cargo roadways as alternative routes to ease congestion in downtown Miami and on surrounding highways, including I-395. PortMiami will also maintain coordination with the Florida Department of Transportation, the City of Miami, Kaseya Center and other downtown stakeholders.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the initiatives reflected the county’s commitment to improving mobility through innovation while ensuring the safe movement of people and goods. She also recognised PortMiami Director Jonathan Daniels for leading the initiative during his first eight weeks in the role, working alongside Deputy Mayor Roy Coley and Chief of Public Safety Arnold Palmer.
Miami-Dade County District 8 Commissioner and Aviation and Seaport Committee Chairwoman Danielle Cohen Higgins said the measures demonstrated the importance of cooperation between the port, residents, businesses and government partners in maintaining efficient operations.
Daniels said the improvements were intended to reduce congestion, enhance safety and improve the passenger journey from arrival at the port to embarkation, noting that PortMiami’s position as the world’s busiest cruise port brought responsibility for managing the arrival of millions of guests each year.
The initiatives were developed in collaboration with federal, state and local agencies, cruise lines, transportation providers and community organisations.
PortMiami’s 2026–2027 cruise schedule includes both new and returning vessels across several cruise lines. Ships scheduled to call include Explora III and Scenic Eclipse in October 2026, Norwegian Aura in June 2027 and Royal Caribbean’s Hero of the Seas in August 2027.
