Construction Started of Ponant's Le Commandant Charcot

The world leader in polar cruises, PONANT, officially commenced the building of the polar ship Le Commandant Charcot via traditional steel-cutting ceremony held at VARD Tulcea shipyard (Romania).

The only French-owned cruise line and world leader in luxury expeditions is constructing an exceptional polar exploration ship. Delivery of line's new flagship, the most ambitious ever designed in terms of respect for the environment and travel experience, is scheduled for delivery in 2021.

The ship will be named after the great French explorer, Le Commandant Charcot, the “gentleman of the poles”, respected by all.

PONANT's Le Commandant Charcot is expected to be the first exploration ship to surpass the ecological standards that are set out in international regulations. An electric hybrid ship, it will be powered by LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). Designed for intense polar explorations, with PC2 Polar Class certification, it will sail to the Geographic North Pole.
