Silver Explorer Runs Into Fishing Net

By ,   June 26, 2019 ,   Accidents

Silversea's expedition cruise ship Silver Explorer has become entangled in a drifting fishing net which damaged the vessel and forced a drydock for repairs.

As a result, the ship's July 1 departure was canceled while repairs are underway.

According to the company, the line cutters on Silver Explorer's propeller had not been enough to handle the net, which had tangled the propellers and damaged reduction gear.

Silver Explorer's current 17-day cruise from Otaru to Seward will be cut short by 5 days so the vessel can proceed to Vancouver BC for repairs.

Passengers will be flown (via charter flights from Adak Island, Aleutian Islands) to Anchorage AK. They will get a full refund as well as a future cruise credit, as will those on the cancelled 11-day trip that was to depart on July 1.

Silversea anticipates the vessel will be back in service after that.
