Ishigaki (Ishigachi), also famous as Ishigakijima, is a Japanese island located west of Okinawa Honto and the 2nd-largest island of Yaeyama Island group. It lies within Ishigaki city in Okinawa Prefecture and has a population of around 48,000 inhabitants. The city operates as archipelago's transport and business center. Ishigaki Island is served by the largest airport in Yaeyamas, New Ishigaki Airport.
Much of Ishigaki Island and surrounding waters that include Kabira Bay and Mount Omoto are a protected part of Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park. Like the rest of Okinawa, Ishigaki Island is culturally influenced by both Taiwan and Japan due to its location, nearly 300 km off Taiwan's north eastern coast. A tsunami of record height hit the island in 1771.
Ishigaki Island provided the scene for arrest of Yasuo Hayashi, one of the authors of Aum Shinrikyo's sarin gas attack, 21 months after and 2000 kilometers away from where the outrage took place.
The port of Ishigaki will be expanded so that 5 large coast guard patrol boats of Japan can be stationed there. Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) is also considering to deploy short range anti-ship missiles (Type 96 Multi-Purpose Missile System) on Ishigaki.
The reinforcements are in relation to the uninhabited Senkaku Islands, that lie 170 kilometers north of Ishigaki and are under control of Ishigaki's mayor, which has been given municipal authority over the territory since 1972 when Senkaku Islands reverted from the United States to Japanese government control. China and Taiwan have challenged the sovereignty of Japan over Senkaku Islands since 1972, and with even more intensity since 2012.
