Administratively, Kos Island constitutes a municipality within Kos regional unit, that is part of South Aegean region. Island's principal town and seat of the municipality is the town of Kos.
The island features a 14th-century fortress situated at the entrance to the harbour, built by the Knights Hospitaller in 1315, and another from Antimachia's Byzantine period. The ancient market place of the town of Kos was considered one of the largest in the ancient world. It was the commanding and commercial centre located at the heart of this ancient city and organized around a vast rectangular yard 50 m (160 ft) wide and 300 m (980 ft) long.
The ancient physician Hippocrates is said to have been born on Kos Island. In the center of the town of Kos is the location of the Plane Tree of Hippocrates, dream temple where Hippocrates is supposed to have taught. Scaffolding supports the limbs of the already elderly tree. The small town is also home to International Hippocratic Institute and Hippocratic Museum dedicated to the great man. Close to the Institute lie the ruins of Asklepieion - the site where Herodicus taught Hippocrates medicine.
