Lelystad is a municipality and city in the centre of Netherlands, as well as the capital of Flevoland province. The city was founded in 1967. Lelystad was built on reclaimed land, and named after Cornelis Lely, the engineer of Afsluitdijk (enclosing dyke), making reclamation possible. Lelystad is 3 metres (9.8 ft) below sea level. Its population is 76,290 (May 2014).
Lelystad is the biggest municipality in Holland in area, but a large part of its area is water: IJsselmeer and Markermeer. Another major area is the famous nature park of Oostvaardersplassen, that arose naturally when the South Flevoland polder was drained. Lelystad is surrounded by a square of parks, woodlands and flat farmland. The importance of sky and landscape is emphasized by several pieces of art: works like the Observatorium by Robert Morris and engineers' work.
Lelystad features its own inland port, as well as several marinas and canals which also help to manage polder's water levels.
