Slavonski Brod is a city in eastern Croatia. In 2011 it had a population of 80,000. Situated in the region of Slavonia, it's the centre of Brod-Posavina County, as well as a river port on Sava river. The northeastern part of Slavonski Brod, at Galovo, recently revealed rich deposits of Starčevo culture, dating back in the Early Stone Age. This is the biggest architectural finding in northern Croatia and proves that the locality has been inhabited for more than 8,000 years.
The Baroque period's Brod Fortress, was constructed during Austro-Hungarian Empire in order to serve as a stronghold against Ottoman Empire. It is one of the best preserved European fortresses, and one of the largest on former Austro-Hungarian Military Frontier. City's Franciscan monastery dates back from 18th century, and is also in Baroque style, with exceptional architecture. A faculty of philosophy was opened there in 1720. The most significant annual cultural event in Slavonski Brod is the kids' festival 'In the World of the Fairy Tales of Writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić', held in April and May.
