Tolanaro (aka Fort Dauphin) is a port city located on Madagascar's southeastern coast. It is the capital of Tolanaro District and Anosy Region. Fort Dauphin port has been of local importance since the early 15th century as it was the first French settlement in the country. Port d'Ehola is located at approximately 10 km (6 ml) from Fort-Dauphin. The population of Tolanaro is around 46,000 inhabitants.
Tolanaro was initially lying on a narrow, short peninsula but has since grown to cover a greater area, almost to Mount Bezavona, along the ocean.
Since the early 1970s, Tolanaro (Fort Dauphin) suffered an economic decline because of the lack of decent road connections to the rest of Madagascar, rendering its port only of local importance. This in spite of considerable foreign exchange earned from export of live lobster (up to 350 tonnes per year between 1990-2005), sapphires and, up until city's hotels were all filled by the working on QMM's mining project (2007), tourism. Tourists have not come back in any significant numbers.
Anosy area situated around Tolanaro is undergoing a massive transformation that is associated with the development of new ilmenite mine by QIT Madagascar Minerals company (subsidiary of Rio Tinto Group) in the region. The new port at Ehoala, west of Tolanaro as well as a variety of mining facilities, housing for mine workers and new roads have been built at the cost of nearly US$1 billion. These were the first major investments in the infrastructure of the area for many decades.
