September 2019Cruise Illness / Virus Outbreaks

In September 2019, CDC reported a Norovirus outbreak (GI illness) infecting a total of 117 passengers (out of 2055, or 5,7%) and 8 crew (out of 610, or 1,3%). All sick suffered from Norovirus symptoms (predominantly vomiting and diarrhea) and were quarantined to their cabins for 48 hours. The US CDC inspectors boarded the liner in NYC during the overnight in-port stay (Sept 22-23).

The ship was on 18-day Transatlantic repositioning cruise from Rostock to NYC New York (itinerary Sept 5-23) visiting call ports in Norway (Oslo, Bergen), Iceland (Reykjavik), Greenland (Qaqortoq), Canada (St Johns NF, Halifax NS) and USA (Bar Harbor ME, New York City NY).

In October, on the following voyage, CDC reported a Norovirus outbreak with infected 70 passengers (out of 2251, or 3,1%) and 10 crew (out of 610, or 1,6%). The outbreak occurred during the 10-day Canada and New England cruise (itinerary October 3–13) from Montreal to NYC with call ports Quebec City, Halifax NS, Bar Harbor ME, Boston MA.
