24 February 2024Coast Guard Medevacs

On February 24, 2024, while the ship was navigating in Brazilian waters (en route from Fortaleza to Santarem), a male crew sustained serious injuries in the elevator shaft while servicing an onboard lift.

The man received emergency medical services at the Infirmary. Around 1,5 hours following the incident, all passengers were informed via the PA system, and volunteers among the crew (with O-type blood) were requested to donate at the Infirmary.

The ship's Master (Captain Cosimo Pontillo) commanded to change course (approached Belem) and requested assistance from the Brazilian Coast Guard to medevac the injured.

The dispatched rescue helicopter crew airlifted the man. Three CG personnel were lowered from the aircraft and using a stretcher they hoisted the patient from the Pool Deck/10th deck which was cleared out by the ship's crew to allow the medical evacuation. The man (employed as an engineer) was flown to a land hospital (in critical but stable condition). Reportedly, he underwent a 5-hour surgery and was placed in ICU for close monitoring.

Immediately after the medevac, the ship returned to course continuing the voyage toward the Amazon Delta (Macapa).

The incident occurred during the 71-day Around South America Cruise" (itinerary January 4- March 15, roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA) visiting destinations in Mexico, Panama Canal (transit), Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil (including Amazon River), and the Caribbean (French Guiana, Barbados, Grenadines, Dominica, St Lucia, Antigua, St Kitts, BVI, Puerto Rico).
