Viking Rurik (built in 1985 as “Mariya Ulyanova”, acquired in 1990 and operated as “Viking Peterhof” until 2011, last refurbished in 2012/renamed) is one of the Viking Cruises Russia ships – together with Viking Sineus (of the same “Vladimir Ilyich” vessel class). Other sister ships include Viking Akun, Viking Helgi, Viking Ingvar and Viking Truvor. The Viking cruise ship Rurik is named after the Varangian prince who established the Rurikid Dynasty. Rurik consolidated the lands of his brothers Truvor and Sineus into the Kievan Rus empire. The Rurikids ruled Russia for over 700 years, with the last of the lineage being Ivan IV “The Terrible” (1530–1584 AD).
Viking Rurik’s deck plan includes a total of 98 staterooms for 196 passengers, served by 105 crew and staff, across 4 passenger decks, with 1 elevator connecting all decks. The ship features a wraparound Promenade Deck that fully encircles the vessel, allowing guests to enjoy the beautiful countryside scenery along Rurik’s cruise itinerary.
