The Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has signed an agreement to construct a ferry for the Sicilian regional government. This vessel will serve route linking Sicily Island with the Pelagie Islands (Lampedusa, Linosa) and Pantelleria Island.

Lampedusa, in particular, has garnered international attention due to the increased arrival of migrant boats on Italy's southernmost island, in addition to being a popular tourist destination.

The construction of the ferryboat is projected to cost EUR 120 million (USD 127 million) and will take place in Palermo, with an expected delivery date in 2026.

Pieroberto Folgiero (Fincantieri's CEO) emphasized the significance of this development as a return of ferry production to Italy, highlighting its innovative nature.

Upon completion, the regional government intends to lease the ship to a private contractor. The vessel itself will have length of 140 m (459 ft), max speed of 19 knots (35 kmh / 22 mph) and max capacity 1000 passengers and 200 cars.
