Spain's Malaga port delivers LNG to cruise ship for the first time

Port Malaga (Spain Granada) is advancing its sustainability commitment through the Green Port initiative, focusing on the supply of alternative fuels for docked/berthed vessels.

A significant milestone was achieved on November 2nd when, for the first time, was successfully executed the operation of supplying Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to a cruise ship.

The 2023-launched Silver Nova (operated by Silversea) arrived at 8 AM and berthed at the dock adjacent to Dique de Levante. The LNG bunkering operation took place at the dock during the workday.

The transportation company ESK facilitated the LNG supply to the ship, utilizing two tanker trucks for two shifts each.

While this operation has been a regular practice on the Malaga-Melilla (Spain-Morocco) ferry route since 2020, the recent successful LNG bunkering of Silver Nova marks a significant expansion of this service within Port Malaga. The ferry Rusadir/fka Honfleur operated by Balearia and recognized for its ecological features, has been regularly LNG-refueled at berth through tanker trucks from ESK Gas Logistics.

This strategic move not only enhances Malaga's port sustainability but also boosts its competitiveness, aligning with the evolving preferences of modern and eco-conscious cruise shipping companies.
