Celebrity Cruises has appointed Janaína Torres as the godmother of Celebrity Xcel, marking the first time a Brazilian chef has taken on this role for a major cruise line.
The announcement coincided with recognition of her as the World’s Best Female Chef for 2024 by World’s 50 Best. Torres’s culinary philosophy, noted for its innovative, zero-waste approach that intertwines cultural heritage with mindful purpose, aligned closely with Celebrity’s commitment to elevated, authentic dining aboard sea-going journeys.
The company emphasized that both Torres and Celebrity Cruises share a dedication to celebrating culture through culinary experiences, grounded in genuine recipes, locally sourced sustainable produce, and attentive service—values intended to transform every meal into a memorable moment.
Celebrity’s president expressed that Torres was seen not only as a figurehead but as a symbol of shared ideals, guiding and elevating the community on board.
The godmother tradition remains a maritime rite steeped in symbolism, meant to bestow protection and good fortune upon both crew and passengers. Torres is scheduled to perform the christening of Celebrity Xcel on November 16, during the ship’s official naming ceremony.
When she enters service, Celebrity Xcel will commence her maiden season from Fort Lauderdale in November, offering alternating 7-night voyages through the Caribbean—calling upon destinations that include The Bahamas, Mexico, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Plata, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten. Her 2026 European season will feature 7- to 11-night Mediterranean voyages departing from Barcelona and Athens, with new overnight stays in Madeira, Portugal.
