P&O Ferries has introduced biofuel on its North Sea service, with the Pride of Hull becoming the first vessel on the HullRotterdam route to operate permanently on B30. The decision follows a successful trial period and marks a step in the company’s broader programme to reduce fleet emissions.

The 215-metre ferry, which carries up to 1,360 passengers and 400 freight vehicles, now runs entirely on B30. This change reduces lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 20% compared with conventional marine fuels, while maintaining the regularity of the service on this key trade and travel corridor between the United Kingdom and continental Europe.

P&O Ferries indicated that the adoption of biofuel supports both freight and passenger operators in meeting their climate objectives, while aligning with wider corporate emission-reduction targets. According to the company, the choice of B30 followed consultations with engine manufacturer Wärtsilä and leading fuel suppliers, who identified it as the most practical transitional fuel to lower emissions without requiring extensive vessel modifications.
