Black Sea maritime link reestablished between Türkiye and Russia

Ferry operations between the Turkish port of Trabzon on the northeast Black Sea coast and Russia’s resort city of Sochi are planned to restart after a hiatus of more than a decade. Reports indicate that the route, last active in 2014, is scheduled to resume in early 2025 under the organisation of SVS Shipping LLC and regional authorities.

The anticipated service is expected to operate two departures per week in each direction—a schedule whereby the vessel will leave Trabzon on Mondays and Thursdays and depart Sochi on Tuesdays and Fridays. The voyage is projected to take approximately 10 to 12 hours.

Authorities on both sides suggest that the reinstated maritime link will enhance regional tourism and trade by offering an alternative to conventional air or overland transport. The vessel planned for this route is designed to accommodate passengers, private vehicles, and light cargo, reflecting a mixed traffic model aimed at strengthening connectivity across this corridor.

While contractual agreements and vessel readiness are reported to be in advanced stages, industry-observers note that challenges remain around certification, insurance, and geopolitical constraints.

Once operational, the revived Trabzon–Sochi ferry will represent a strategic maritime link in the Black Sea region, facilitating cross-border maritime mobility and potentially boosting both leisure and freight movement between Turkey and Russia.
