Excursion catamaran from Mein Schiff 1 capsizes in Samana Bay - all 55 passangers rescued

   November 11, 2025 ,   Accidents

In the waters of Samana Bay on November 10th, 2025, the excursion catamaran Boca de Yuma—carrying 55 passengers from the cruise ship Mein Schiff 1—began taking on water and eventually sank off the coast of the Dominican Republic.

According to the Dominican Navy, the 12-metre craft experienced internal hull damage that caused flooding and led to the vessel’s rapid submergence.

Nearby tour vessels, local coast-guard teams and the navy mounted swift rescue operations once the distress signal was raised. All 55 persons aboard were transferred to safety, though several sustained minor injuries and shock.

Eyewitness reports describe passengers calling for help as the catamaran sank quickly, while the navy and tour company vessels coordinated communication, logistics and operational support for the rescue.

An investigation has now been launched into the cause of the incident. Preliminary indications suggest mechanical failure, though environmental conditions are also being taken into account. The vessel had recently passed inspection, and authorities are reviewing maintenance records and operational logs.
