Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines hosted a roundtable discussion aboard the Borealis at Portsmouth International Port on November 12th, 2025. The event, convened by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), assembled UK government officials and energy sector stakeholders to address the acceleration of the cruise industry's transition to net zero emissions by 2050, a goal aligned with the International Maritime Organization's strategy.

The dialogue focused on the industry's evolving energy requirements, with a particular emphasis on the role of Onshore Power Supply (OPS). This technology allows vessels to connect to local electrical grids while in port, thereby reducing emissions. The OPS system currently being installed at Portsmouth is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 20,000 metric tonnes annually from 2027. Mike Sellers, Director of Portsmouth International Port, noted a strong collective appetite for sustainable fuel technology and acknowledged the challenges of delivering such innovative systems, while also observing a widespread support for their success.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines confirmed its commitment to utilizing OPS where available for its equipped vessels, Borealis and Bolette. The line is also continuing its investment in low-carbon technologies, including silicone-based hull coatings and advanced propeller systems designed to improve hydrodynamic efficiency.

Following the discussions, attendees were provided with guided tours of key operational areas aboard the Borealis, including the Engine Control Room and the Shore Power Room, offering a practical perspective on the sustainability measures being implemented.
