A medical evacuation was carried out from the cruise ship Viking Sky off the coast of the Mexican state of Michoacán after a 76-year-old American passenger sustained a serious leg injury on January 1st.

According to information released by the Mexican Navy, authorities were notified following a request from the vessel to disembark a passenger who had suffered a fracture to the left femur as a result of a fall onboard. The response was coordinated through the Sixteenth Naval Zone and the Naval Station of Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance.

In response to the request, a naval unit from ENSAR Lázaro Cárdenas was dispatched with trained rescue personnel and naval medical staff to conduct the operation. Upon arrival at the agreed rendezvous point, medical personnel boarded Viking Sky, evaluated the injured passenger, and prepared her for transfer using a stretcher.

The passenger was transported safely ashore and transferred in stable condition to a Civil Protection ambulance. She was then taken to a local hospital for further medical care. No additional information regarding her medical status has been made public.
