Antigua Cruise Port has initiated a national competition to designate a permanent name for its newly developed quay area within the Upland Development site in St. John’s harbour, a step aligned with the port’s broader expansion and modernisation efforts. The call for entries was made at the opening of the new cruise terminal, and it seeks proposals from Antiguans and Barbudans both on the islands and throughout the diaspora. The selected name will join Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay as part of the evolving port precinct, contributing to the city’s maritime landscape and reflecting local identity and heritage.
Submissions are to include an original name accompanied by a concise explanation, with guidelines indicating that entries should embody cultural identity, creative character and a forward-looking vision for cruise tourism in Antigua and Barbuda. The competition’s judging criteria are set to assess how well proposals reflect national culture and identity, their symbolic clarity, distinctiveness, ease of pronunciation and suitability for long-term public use. A deadline for submissions has been established for late February 2026.
In conjunction with the naming initiative, the port authority has outlined that the competition’s grand prize will comprise a cruise for two, aimed at allowing the winner to experience the new terminal and the country’s homeporting operations firsthand. The effort has been framed as an opportunity for community involvement in shaping the ongoing development of Antigua Cruise Port as it positions itself for a growing cruise season and increased passenger traffic.
The introduction of the competition follows significant investment in cruise infrastructure, including the Upland Development and the associated terminal enhancements designed to support a modern cruise hub capable of accommodating increasing numbers of calls and larger vessels.
