During the broader regional military escalation involving the USA, Israel and Iran, a projectile fell into the waters adjacent to the docked German-flagged cruise ship Mein Schiff 4 at Zayed Port (Abu Dhabi) on March 1st.
Photos and videos circulated by news agencies showed plumes of smoke rising from the harbour, consistent with debris from intercepted missiles or other ordnance falling into the sea near the vessel’s berth.
Mein Schiff 4, operated by TUI Cruises, was held at the port as the security situation unfolded.
Passengers aboard received alerts to proceed to internal spaces and avoid external areas of the ship during the incident. Official communications indicated that there were no immediate reports of injuries or direct damage to the liner itself.
The current cruise itinerary, already disrupted by cancellations of departures through early March, remained on hold with regional port calls suspended as operators assessed conditions ashore.
The incident occurred within the context of sustained Iranian missile and drone launches toward the UAE, part of a broader exchange of military actions in the region, during which many of the projectiles were intercepted by UAE air-defence systems. Large numbers of intercepted ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles were reported.
Reports from official defence sources note that most threat projectiles were destroyed before impact, though falling debris struck populated areas of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, causing some material damage and casualties ashore.
In the wake of the event, deliberate safety protocols have been maintained at cruise terminals across the UAE, with operators keeping affected ships in port. At the same time, security and maritime authorities monitor ongoing developments and advise on navigational risk associated with regional tensions and airspace closures. The duration of these disruptions relative to the remainder of the Gulf cruise season has not yet been determined.
