The Port of Auckland (New Zealand) has announced plans to open a new international cruise terminal, Te Waharoa, in early 2027. The facility will be located on Quay Street in the city's central waterfront area.

The project forms part of a wider NZ$200 million (~USD 114M) investment by the port authority to modernize the cruise precinct. The program also includes the development of a new large-ship berth at Bledisloe North, designed to accommodate cruise vessels with max LOA length of 350 m/1148 ft.

Auckland Port currently receives more than 300,000 cruise passengers annually, and the port expects the additional infrastructure to support further growth in ship calls and visitor arrivals. The new terminal is designed to process up to 1,500 passengers per hour, a capacity intended to facilitate the efficient movement of visitors arriving directly into the city centre.

According to the port’s chief executive, Roger Gray, the development represents an investment in infrastructure intended to support Auckland’s long-term economic prosperity and strengthen its position as an internationally connected destination. He indicated that the Te Waharoa terminal would help attract additional cruise vessels while ensuring that arriving passengers experience an efficient arrival process and a strong first impression of the city.

Once operational, the Te Waharoa Terminal will feature dedicated areas for buses and taxis serving regional sightseeing routes. Its location will also allow passengers to walk directly into the Britomart waterfront district, where connections are available to ferry services, hotels, restaurants and other attractions within Auckland’s downtown area.

The investment reflects the broader importance of tourism to New Zealand's economy. Tourism is the country's second-largest export sector (following forestry), accounting for ~7.7% of GDP. The cruise ship tourism alone generates NZD 600+ million annually in economic value for Auckland.

Through the construction of Te Waharoa and the new Bledisloe North wharf, Port Auckland aims to strengthen its role as a gateway for international cruise traffic and support continued growth in visitor arrivals to the city and the wider region.
