More than 1,700 passengers and crew aboard the cruise vessel Ambition have been confined on board in Bordeaux following an outbreak of gastroenteritis during the vessel’s current voyage.
The ship, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, reported 49 active cases of gastrointestinal illness, including 48 passengers and one crew member. French health authorities imposed quarantine measures after the vessel arrived in Bordeaux, pending the outcome of medical testing and epidemiological investigations.
A 92-year-old male passenger died aboard the vessel on Sunday. The cruise operator stated that the guest had not displayed symptoms associated with the outbreak and indicated that the cause of death had not yet been established.
The first reported signs of illness aboard Ambition were recorded on May 11th during the vessel’s voyage through Western Europe. The ship had departed from Belfast before calling at Liverpool and continuing toward the French Atlantic coast and Spain. Health officials later noted that reported cases increased following embarkation in Liverpool.
French regional authorities dispatched medical personnel to the vessel after its arrival in Bordeaux, while samples were collected for analysis at Bordeaux University Hospital. Subsequent testing confirmed that the outbreak involved viral gastroenteritis caused by norovirus, a highly contagious illness commonly associated with enclosed environments such as cruise ships.
According to Ambassador Cruise Line, enhanced sanitation and prevention procedures were implemented immediately after the first cases were identified. The operator stated that measures introduced aboard included intensified cleaning and disinfection of public spaces, assisted service arrangements in selected dining venues, and continued guidance to passengers concerning hand hygiene and the prompt reporting of symptoms to the ship’s medical team.
The quarantine measures resulted in passengers and crew remaining aboard while authorities assessed the extent of transmission and monitored the effectiveness of containment procedures. Officials also confirmed that no connection had been established between the outbreak aboard Ambition and a separate hantavirus incident reported earlier on another expedition vessel.
