The passenger ferry Andros King was involved in a berthing incident at the Port of Rafina (20 km east of Athens/Piraeus) on the evening of June 8th when the vessel struck the northern breakwater while completing its arrival from Mykonos via Tinos and Andros. The impact caused significant damage to the concrete structure, with local reports indicating that part of the breakwater was effectively split by the collision.
At the time of the incident, the vessel was carrying 283 passengers, 67 private vehicles, 13 trucks, 10 motorcycles and a crew of 60. Northerly winds of force 4 to 5 on the Beaufort scale were reported in the area during the approach to the port.
Despite the severity of the collision, no injuries were reported among passengers or crew, and authorities detected no marine pollution or fuel leakage in the harbour area. Port officials and coast guard personnel responded immediately to assess both the vessel and the damaged port infrastructure.
Initial inspections determined that Andros King had not sustained damage affecting her seaworthiness. Following the completion of technical checks, the ferry was cleared to resume service and departed Rafina the following morning at 07:50 a.m.
The incident occurred during the vessel’s berthing manoeuvre, and the Port Authority of Rafina has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the collision. The inquiry will examine navigational, operational and environmental factors associated with the accident.
