VIDEO: Royal Caribbean's SoundSeeker Turns Photos into Musical

In a move that is due to redefine modern vacations, Royal Caribbean created a first-of-its-kind tool transforming travelers’ memorable photos into original and shareable soundtrack with a video to match.

Over a year in the making, the groundbreaking, patent-pending digital experience SoundSeeker™ is powered by artificial intelligence (AI). This innovative tool is specially designed to use machine learning to create original soundtracks that are based on the content of each photograph.

At users can upload 3 photos of their choice. The AI analyzes them based on landscape, colour, backdrop, body language, facial expression and emotion. SoundSeeker turns them into a soundtrack DJing life’s brag-worthy moments. Aficionados can follow along on the social channels of Royal Caribbean, and via searching #SoundSeeker.

Royal Caribbean International teamed up with experts from Berklee College of Music, as well as technologists from all around the world, in order to create the song generator.

SoundSeeker is based on machine learning, the artificial intelligence technique enabling computers to simulate human intelligence and make their own decisions without explicit instructions. Learning process entailed over 600 hours in which the cruise company and a team of technologists and musicians reviewed hundreds of music tracks and 10,000 photos, matching each of 2.5 million combinations to 1 of 10 moods.

SoundSeeker's AI uses Google Cloud Vision for identifying objects, facial expressions and colours in user’s photo via referencing the roadmap created by the leaders in music theory at Berklee. The SoundSeeker then finds musical elements corresponding to each of the moods in the photo to compose a distinct audio and visual photo album.

The tool is equipped to generate more than 1 million unique tracks, that are based on custom base tracks, exclusively composed for the cruise line. The tracks take inspiration from a variety of music, including hip-hop, rock, electronic dance music.
