Fire on Greek Ferry Forces 1000 Passengers to Abandon the Ship

A fire broke out on a Greek passenger ferry carrying 1016 people onboard.

The ferry sailed back to port Piraeus (Athens) after the fire broke out enroute to Chania, Crete Island. No injuries have been reported.

The Eleftherios Venizelos ship (owned by Anek Lines) with 141 crew and 875 passengers was sailing off Hydra Island when it notified the Greek coastguard that a car parking compartment had caught fire around midnight.

The official added the situation was not worrying and the ferry was expected to dock at Piraeus.
