An elderly couple were arrested after ‘large amount of cocaine’ had been found in their luggage as both returned from a Caribbean cruise.

The pair, aged 70yo and 72yo, were held after the drugs had been discovered in their stateroom when their ship, CMV Marco Polo, docked at Lisbon Cruise Terminal.

The Portuguese police acted after receiving tip-off from the National Crime Agency.

The unnamed couple are now being held in prison after appearing before a judge in closed court hearing. In a statement, the police described them as a ‘foreign couple’. Portuguese media reported they were British.

It has not been specified how much cocaine was seized.

According to a spokesman for Cruise & Maritime Voyages, Portuguese police officials had attended the Marco Polo ship in Lisbon last Tuesday, December 4, and detained 2 passengers who were travelling onboard the Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ ship.
