SeaDream announced it had received a grant for US$1.8 million for the creation of the revolutionary SeaDream Innovation ship from Enova, an organization owned by Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment which is responsible for the promotion of environmentally friendly production and consumption of energy.
SeaDream Innovation is stated to become the most advanced hybrid ship in the world being built today. She will sail to all 7 continents.
Enova supports SeaDream and the new mega-yacht, given her "creative and sustainability-focused approach to energy and climate technology."
SeaDream Innovation features a large battery pack of approx 4 MWh, that enables sailing without emissions and very silently for up to 3 hours with no disturbance to wildlife. The hybrid system reduces local emissions via supporting the diesel generators in “peak shaving mode”, thus reducing fuel consumption.
The mega-yacht will sail to sensitive areas like the Norwegian fjords as well as along the ice edge toward the North Pole due to this system. The batteries bring an added degree of safety and act as “spinning reserve” - in the event of a motor shutdown it switches to the use of batteries with no power loss.
SeaDream Innovation will install an “Organic Rankine Cycle” machine taking waste heat from the engines and converting it to electricity. This is capable of producing up to 150 kW of electrical power, that would otherwise have been wasted energy. Instead, it reduces fuel consumption resulting in lower emissions.
Where available by cruise port, the SeaDream Innovation ship can be plugged into shoreside electrical grids by using a multi-voltage shore connection system to reduce local pollution.
The mega-yacht boasts 4 modern diesel engines and an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system for reducing NOx (nitrous oxide) emissions to the most stringent IMO rules. The engines are rated to meet the most stringent MARPOL Tier III limits. Innovation features 2 podded propulsors providing the highest maneuverability and efficiency. Additionally, SeaDream Innovation has the high ice class designated by PC6.
