Review of SeaDream III

The 2029-built SeaDream III cruise ship (formerly SeaDream Innovation, currently on order) is an ultra-luxury superyacht project developed for the SeaDream Yacht Club.

The vessel (IMO number tba) will be Bahamas-flagged (MMSI tba) and registered in Nassau.

History - construction and ownership

SeaDream Innovation was initially scheduled for launch in 2021 and was to be constructed by the shipbuilding company Damen Group at Damen Shipyards Mangalia (Mangalia, Romania). For the first time since 2001, SeaDream Yacht Club planned to expand its fleet with a newbuild, introducing its new "Global Yachting" vacation concept. SeaDream Innovation's design was based on large open-deck spaces (totaling 3500 m2 / 37680 ft2) and the fleet's most spacious staterooms.

On December 2, 2019, SeaDream Yacht Club and Damen Shipyards Group announced the termination of the "SeaDream Innovation" project. SeaDream instead announced plans to purchase a second-hand vessel in 2020.

The SeaDream 3 project was officially announced on September 1, 2026, by SeaDream Yachts' founder and owner, Atle Brynestad. The shipbuilder is China Merchants Cruise Shipbuilding. The vessel is planned for launch/inauguration in July 2029.

The 220-passenger SeaDream Innovation was designed to be very different from fleetmates SeaDream 1 and SeaDream 2. Besides the larger passenger capacity, the vessel was planned with larger public spaces and venues featuring modern design, stylish furniture, and abundant floral arrangements. SeaDream Innovation had LOA length 155 m, beam 21 m, GT/volume 15600 tons, 110 staterooms, 9 decks (4 with cabins), and a shipbuilding cost of EUR 190 million/USD 210 million (2019 rates).

SeaDream fleet

In comparison, SeaDream 3 is very similar, with LOA 151,2 m, beam 22 m, water draft 5,5 m (18 ft), air draft 35 m (115 ft), GT tonnage/volume 16500 tons. The length-to-beam ratio (~6,94:1) makes the vessel substantially more yacht-like than a conventional contemporary cruiser. The relatively shallow draft and hull shape/slender beam allow the ship to reach smaller harbors and secluded anchorages that larger ships cannot access.

Decks and Cabins

The SeaDream Innovation was planned with a total of 110 staterooms (all outside and in Suite categories) and a maximum passenger capacity of 220.

The superyacht was designed to provide an all-inclusive cruise experience with a 1-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio. Standard cabin amenities (offered in each stateroom) included a king-size double bed with bedside cabinets, a large en-suite bathroom with marble countertops, hot tub, WC, single-sink vanity, under-sink storage, magnifying mirror, massage shower, Bulgari bath amenities, and plush cotton bathrobes. The cabin's living area featured an infotainment center with smart UHD TV (satellite reception, on-demand movies), CD/DVD player, Internet outlets, iPod docking station, personalized stationery, a three-seat sofa with low table, mirrored vanity table with chair, coffee table with armchairs, large wardrobe, electronic safe box (in the closet), and large mirrors. Refrigerators and minibars were to be fully stocked with complimentary soft drinks, beer, and bottled water.

Cabin balconies were to be furnished with two deckchairs and one table. Higher-category suites additionally featured a separate bedroom with a walk-in closet, a bathroom with a double-sink vanity and whirlpool tub, a four-seat dining table, and larger balconies equipped with sun loungers and daybeds.

SeaDream Innovation was designed with 9 decks, of which 5 were passenger-accessible and 4 contained cabins.

SeaDream III has 10 decks, of which 5 (floors 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) accommodate staterooms.

What is known and confirmed so far is that SeaDream 3 has a considerably broader accommodation product than its fleetmates, including more and larger suites, Commodore staterooms, and connecting cabin configurations.

Except for Deck 4's cabins (which are Oceanviews), all other staterooms (on decks 5-6-7-8) have private step-out balconies.

Expanded accommodation intended to make the ship suitable for both short and much longer global itineraries.

Shipboard facilities and amenities

A distinctive feature of the SeaDream yachts in warm destinations is the beach barbecue "caviar in the surf". Another benefit is the onboard beverage policy, where all drinks except connoisseur wines and premium brands are complimentary. All meals in the Dining Room follow an open-seating concept at all times. Breakfast typically includes a small buffet selection of fruits, bread, cereals, and yogurt, while hot dishes are ordered from a menu.

SeaDream guests enjoy entertaining themselves. Entertainment options include an intimate Piano Bar, Top of the Yacht Bar, Casino, Boutique, Promenade, Spa, Gym, Beauty Salon, Library, Golf Simulator, Main Lounge with light music and first-run movies, an outdoor swimming pool (aft-deck location), whirlpool, and a wide selection of in-stateroom CDs and DVDs. Passengers may also borrow iPods preloaded with various types of music at no charge.

 

SeaDream III's (and Innovation's) design features three Marinas that could operate simultaneously (watersports launch platforms providing uninterrupted access to Zodiacs, kayaks, and sailboats), an in-ocean swimming pool, a helideck with one helicopter (used for private tours), one seaplane, outdoor dining venues, and a "sleeping under the stars" experience. The watersports marina allows passengers to snorkel and sail directly from the stern (aft). Complimentary water toys include snorkeling gear, sea kayaks, Hobie Cat sailboats, banana boats, and Jet Skis. The vessel also provides complimentary mountain bikes for shore excursions.

Among the ship's other features are a dedicated pool deck/sundeck, expansive upper decks, open-air/alfresco dining and gathering spaces and relaxation areas.

The final restaurant names haven't been released.

An unusual detail is that every crew member has an individual (single-occupancy) cabin. The staff and crew members also have a professional gym and a dedicated sundeck with a Jacuzzi.

Itineraries

SeaDream 3's itinerary program starts with the maiden voyage on July 10th, 2029. The itinerary (from Hong Kong to Tokyo) includes the naming/christening ceremony scheduled to be held in Tokyo on July 21st. The inaugural cruise itinerary visits Japan's southern islands and Pacific coast, including Ishigaki, Yakushima, Okinawa, Amami Oshima, Kochi, Shimizu, and ending in Tokyo with the christening ceremony.

SeaDream 3's inaugural schedule (2029) lists destinations (ports and islands) in Asia (China, Japan, Korea), Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific (islands, Great Barrier Reef, Australia and New Zealand). The ship's 2030 schedule/planned deployment expands to India, the Arabian Gulf, Southern Europe/Mediterranean, the UK/British Isles, Northern Europe/Baltic and Arctic (Norway, Svalbard, Greenland, Iceland), North America (Canada, East Coast USA, the Great Lakes, the Caribbean), Central America (Colombia, Panama), and South America. According to the cruise company, the ship's itineraries for the first 24 months will cover 6 continents, 73 different countries, and 364 destinations.

The superyacht is also scheduled to undertake a 180-night World Cruise beginning January 5th, 2031. The itinerary (from West Palm Beach to London) includes a Panama Canal transit followed by destinations across the South Pacific, Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

SeaDream Innovation's itinerary program was scheduled to start on September 18th, 2021 (inaugural cruise). The ship was planned to operate itineraries visiting all seven continents, with over 200 call ports in 49 countries. Passengers would have the opportunity to explore the world's most remote destinations in ultimate luxury, including Svalbard Islands and Norway's fjords, Antarctica, the Northwest Passage route, Australia and New Zealand, the Great Barrier Reef, Oceania, East Asia, and Alaska.

During the inaugural season, SeaDream Innovation was scheduled to visit all continents, with over 200 ports in 49 countries. Season highlights included:

The SeaDream Innovation shipbuilding contract between Oslo-based SeaDream Yacht Club and Damen Shipyards Group was signed on March 20th, 2019. In 2018, Damen Cruise was established as a subsidiary specializing in cruise shipbuilding, while Damen Shipyards Mangalia became a new joint venture between Damen Shipyards Group and the Romanian Government. The Mangalia yard, located on the Black Sea, is currently Damen's largest shipyard. SeaDream Innovation was planned to be fully constructed and outfitted at Damen Mangalia. The vessel's construction was scheduled to start in October 2019, with delivery planned for September 2021.

As of 2019, the shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group operated 36 shipyards for the design, construction, and repair of various vessel types. The company's portfolio includes tugboats, patrol boats, workboats (supply and firefighting), high-speed ships, cargo vessels (container ships, heavy-lift ships, inland cargo barges, gas carriers, oil tankers, RO-RO ships, RO-PAX/ferries), as well as mega-yachts, expedition cruise ships, offshore vessels (anchor-handling, buoy-laying, cable-laying, offshore carriers, MPVs/multi-purpose vessels, offshore support vessels, platform supply vessels), naval vessels (amphibious, auxiliary, combatant, training), fishing vessels (trawlers, fish carriers, longliners), research vessels, pontoons and barges, floating drydocks, and dredging equipment.

Ship technology

SeaDream Innovation is a polar-class vessel (Polar Code 6 / PC6) with an ice-strengthened hull. The design is similar to Seabourn's newest ship Seabourn Venture. Following Innovation's delivery in 2021 (construction and outfitting), Damen Cruise was also set to become SeaDream's long-term partner, providing maritime services throughout the vessel's lifecycle, including maintenance, repairs, refurbishments, and upgrades at the company's repair yards worldwide.

SeaDream Innovation features a large battery pack (approximately 4 MWh) that enables zero-emission and silent cruising for up to 3 hours, minimizing disturbance to wildlife. The hybrid (diesel-electric) propulsion system supports the diesel generators in "peak shaving mode" (reducing energy consumption during peak demand periods), thereby lowering fuel consumption and emissions. The technology allows the mega-yacht to visit some of the world's most environmentally sensitive marine and coastal areas. The ship's batteries also improve safety by providing a "spinning reserve" (additional power available by increasing diesel generators' output). If the main engines shut down, the system switches to battery power without loss of propulsion.

The vessel's "Organic Rankine Cycle" (ORC) machine captures waste heat from the engines and converts it into electricity. This system can generate up to 150 kW of additional electrical power from energy that would otherwise be lost. The technology also reduces fuel consumption and emissions. Developed in the late 1950s, ORC technology uses organic fluids with lower boiling points than water-steam systems, enabling heat recovery from lower-temperature sources such as biomass combustion and industrial waste heat.

Depending on the port, the ship can receive shoreside electrical power supply via a multi-voltage cable connection to reduce in-port emissions. The mega-yacht is powered by four marine diesel engines and is equipped with an SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction) that reduces NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions. The engines comply with MARPOL Tier III standards. The vessel's propulsion system is based on two electric podded propulsors, providing high maneuverability and efficiency. The hull's ice-class rating is PC6 (one of the highest classifications for a passenger vessel).

In mid-May 2019, the shipowner announced that it had received a grant of USD 1.8 million for the SeaDream Innovation shipbuilding project. The grant was provided by Enova SF, a Norwegian government enterprise owned by Norway's Ministry of Climate and Environment. The organization promotes environmentally friendly production and energy consumption.

In June 2019, the shipbuilder Damen contracted ALMACO Group to supply (deliver and install as prefabricated modules) all 114 passenger cabins and 110 crew cabins, as well as hallways/corridors and crew-only areas (including galleys/kitchens, provision rooms, and laundries), plus galley equipment.

In September 2019, the Norwegian company Kongsberg Maritime (the vessel's designer) won its first full-scope cruise ship tender. The deal included the supply and installation of the vessel's power plant and propulsion system (ELegance pod thrusters, Bergen Marine diesel engines), as well as stabilizers, the Navigation Bridge, automation systems, and the electrical-navigation package.
