Review of TUI River Cruises

TUI River Cruises is TUI Group's river cruise subsidiary and travel brand. It was launched in 2021 to leverage the TUI brand's strong recognition in the UK and to expand its vertically integrated holiday portfolio into European river cruising.

Unlike many established river cruise operators, TUI River Cruises is primarily a brand owner, tour operator and a ship-owning company. TUI's current river fleet (Skyla, Maya, Isla, Aria, Elara) consists of older vessels that were reacquired by TUI AG and fully refurbished. Historically, some of these boats were managed by other shipowners (like Premicon Flussreisen GmbH) before TUI repurchased and rebranded them for their specific British holiday market. The newbuilds (Luzia and future boats) are ordered from, designed and constructed by Concordia Damen Shipbuilding in Werkendam, Netherlands. These vessels retain direct corporate ownership within the TUI Group. The Nile fleet (Al Horeya and Bahareya) is also TUI AG-owned and operates year-round in Egypt, also directly integrated into the TUI River Cruises operations.

Company History & Ownership

As a travel brand, TUI River Cruises occupies the upper-mainstream to premium segment and targets predominantly British travelers seeking a simplified, value-driven river travel holiday.

In April 2019, TUI AG terminated the charters of its three riverboats (Skyla, Maya, Isla) and established the UK-focused brand "TUI River Cruises". The new brand was initially scheduled to start operations in summer 2020, but due to the global health crisis, its inauguration was postponed to August 2021 (a delay of approximately 1.5 years).

TUI River Cruises is a fully owned subsidiary of TUI AG, a British-German travel and tourism corporation. TUI Group also owns the companies Marella Cruises UK and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.

The parent company, TUI AG, was established in 1923 as Preußische Bergwerks- und Hütten-Aktiengesellschaft (Prussian Mining and Smelting Company), later renamed Preussag AG (until 1997) - an industrial and mining conglomerate. TUI AG fully or partially owns several travel agencies, hotel chains (353 hotels), retail shops, five airlines (TUI Airways, TUI fly Belgium, TUI fly Deutschland, TUI fly Netherlands, TUI fly Nordic, with a fleet of 134 aircraft), and three cruise lines - TUI Cruises (Mein Schiff fleet), Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, and Marella Cruises.

TUI River Cruises' headquarters are in Luton, England, within TUI UK & Ireland - the UK's leading travel brand and the British arm of TUI Group.

TUI River Cruises doesn't operate as a standalone company with its own executive board. Leadership ultimately sits within TUI UK & Ireland, reporting into TUI Group. Key senior executives include Sebastian Ebel (TUI Group's CEO/Chief Executive Officer) and Neil Swanson (TUI UK&Ireland's Managing Director).

Strategic decisions regarding fleet expansion, product development and investment are aligned with TUI Group's central tourism strategy.

Brand Positioning

TUI River Cruises is in the upper mainstream/premium market when compared to other major European river cruise brands, such as Viking (shipowner, mainstream-premium), AmaWaterways (ship-charterer, premium+), Avalon Waterways (shipowner, upper premium), Scenic Group (shipowner, luxury), Uniworld (shipowner, boutique hotel luxury), APT Travel Group (shipowner, luxury), and Riviera Travel (ship-charterer, premium).

TUI's strengths are: strong brand recognition, extensive UK retail and online distribution, integrated holiday ecosystem (airlines, hotels, transfers), competitive package pricing, asset-light operating model, and ability to cross-sell to millions of existing TUI customers.

TUI's weaknesses are: a limited fleet (compared with its rivals), lower brand recognition outside the UK, and less onboard luxury (when compared to Swiss or all-inclusive brands).

TUI's river cruise deals are complete holiday packages, typically including: flights and transfers (UK departure airports), the river voyage, luggage allowance, and optional pre-/post-cruise hotel stays. This differentiates TUI from many European river cruise operators selling primarily cruise-only products.

Typical base package/standard inclusions include: full board dining, selected drinks with meals, live onboard entertainment, airport transfers (package dependent), and flights (on fly-cruise packages). The emphasis is on convenience rather than luxury.

TUI River Cruises is expected to continue growing through selective fleet expansion via owned newbuilds, deeper integration with TUI package holidays, digital booking enhancements, targeting first-time river cruisers in the UK market, and expanding shoulder-season and themed cruisetours.

Company Changes

River travel enthusiasts can choose from a variety of itineraries and optional shipboard and land packages. Standard (basic) TUI river cruise pricing includes alcohol (beers and wines by the glass) and soft drinks with all meals, as well as gratuities (onboard tips), service charges, and complimentary bicycles (available in call ports on current cruise itineraries). Premium drink packages are optional and available at an extra cost.

All TUI riverboats feature balcony suites.

Shore excursions range from sightseeing tours (guided by local experts) to bike tours.

TUI's first riverboats were the sister ships TUI Isla, TUI Maya, and TUI Skyla.

Between 2024 and 2027, TUI expanded its river fleet with several additional boats: TUI Al Horeya (2024/Egypt's Nile River), TUI Bahareya (2025/Nile River), TUI Alma (2025/Portugal's Douro River), TUI Aria (2018-built/2026-chartered), TUI Luzia (2027/Douro) and TUI Elara (2027/Rhine River).

The new cruise company offers GBP 120 (~EUR 140 / USD 155) per person in onboard credit (OBC) towards all land tour bookings. TUI's riverboats Maya, Skyla, and Isla each have a capacity of 155 passengers (plus 40 crew and staff), a LOA length of 135 meters (445 ft), and 4 decks (3 housing the cabins). Standard cabins are 12 m2 (130 ft2) and feature fixed double beds.

TUI riverboats' venues include:

  • (Deck 2) cabins, Lobby (Reception Desk, Tour Desk, Library), wellness facilities (Spa, Gym, Hair Salon)
  • (Deck 3) cabins, Observatory Lounge, Bar Lounge, Bow Terrace, 2 restaurants (Bistro Buffet, Verdastro Dining Room). Verdastro Restaurant serves buffet-style breakfast and a-la-carte lunch and dinner (with waiter service). Bistro Restaurant is for buffet-style dining only (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). The Observatory is the show lounge with live entertainment in the evenings (musical performances, stand-up comedy acts, crew shows, themed dance parties).
  • (Deck 4) Sundeck with a games area (shuffleboard), shaded seating (Sundeck Lounge), sunbathing area with padded loungers, sunbeds, and daybeds.

In December 2019, TUI signed an exclusive partnership with Live Business UK (one of Europe's largest entertainment program developers and suppliers) for TUI River Cruises. As part of the deal, Live Business UK developed the onboard entertainment programming for the boats and is also responsible for recruiting cruise directors, hosts, ship musicians, guest performers, local tour guides, and other experts.

(News ID 13968, 13983) In October 2024, TUI announced TUI Ria (a fully refurbished vessel), the fleet's largest riverboat (190 passengers), which debuted in 2026.

(Coronavirus Crisis) Passenger Shipping Pause 2020-2021

Due to the COVID pandemic, TUI River Cruises suspended operations by canceling all voyages with pre-scheduled departures from March 15, 2020, through August 15, 2021.

TUI planned to resume river sailings on November 26, 2020 (Christmas and New Year itineraries), but these were eventually canceled through August 2021. The brand was inaugurated on August 15th, with TUI Maya leaving from Frankfurt.

All affected bookings were automatically canceled and fully refunded in FCC (Future Cruise Credit) notes for the full cost of the cruise. The FCCs can be used for a new voyage (with rebooking) or fully refunded (100%) in cash after 12 months.

Itinerary of TUI River Cruises

TUI River Cruises specializes in passenger shipping in Europe and on the Nile, and it is primarily UK-focused (as a source market).

TUI's core river fleet consists of three fully refurbished old ships: TUI Maya, TUI Skyla, and TUI Isla. The boats usually operate round-trips from the homeports Passau and Frankfurt (Germany), Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Budapest, Hungary.

In January 2022, TUI announced the restart dates of the riverboats after the winter 2021 season was suspended due to Europe's rising COVID-19 Omicron cases. TUI's Rhine program was first halted before Christmas 2021, when Germany's government imposed travel restrictions on UK tourists.

TUI's river shipping operations were planned to resume with TUI Skyla on March 28th. The "Magic of the Danube" itinerary (7-night roundtrip from Budapest) visited ports in Slovakia, Austria, and Germany. Prices started at GBP 1120 per person with double occupancy.

TUI's first 14-night voyage started on April 8th (TUI Isla). The "European Icons" itinerary began in Amsterdam and visited ports in Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary, ending in Budapest. Prices started at GBP 2010 per person.

TUI's Rhine voyages resumed on April 8th with the "Rhine Gems" itinerary visiting Koblenz and Speyer (Germany Rhineland-Palatinate), as well as Basel, Switzerland. The 7-day roundtrip departs from Frankfurt am Main, with fares starting at GBP 1170 per person.

Themed voyages started on April 1 (TUI Maya) with the "Vines and Valleys" Moselle River itinerary.

In December 2023, TUI River Cruises announced a fleet expansion with two new vessels: TUI Al Horeya (Nile River, 2024-inaugurated) and TUI Alma (Douro River, 2025-inaugurated). In November 2024, the addition of TUI Bahareya (Nile River, 2025-inaugurated) was announced.

Debuting in 2026, the fully refurbished TUI Aria (2018-built) offers voyages on the Rhine and Moselle rivers (departing from the homeports Amsterdam, Basel, and Frankfurt) with 6- to 9-night itineraries.

In 2027, TUI inaugurates two newbuild boats - TUI Elara (Rhine River) and TUI Luzia (Douro River).
