Century Cruises China

Century Cruises (also branded as Century River Cruises, Chinese name 世纪游轮) is a Chongqing, China-based luxury river-cruise group whose operating roots date to 1992. It built its reputation on the Yangtze, initially as a travel company and subsequently as an owner/operator of increasingly sophisticated, large-capacity luxury river ships. Its current controlling shareholder is Chongqing Gaund Holding Group, headed by founder/chairman Jianhu Peng.

• "Century Cruises Europe AG" is the Switzerland-registered (Basel-based) legal entity established in December 2025 for the European operations.

Note: All these companies are incorporated specifically for travel/tour-operator activities and the organization, marketing, and operation of river cruises.

Century's planned annual volume is ~300,000 guests (globally) by 2028, with ~225,000 passengers reported for 2025.

Century's strategic partnerships are with United Waterways AG (European fleet and operations management) and Concordia Damen (shipbuilding).

Since 2024–2026, Century is no longer simply a Chinese Yangtze cruise line. It has been repositioning itself as a global river-cruise company, with three principal geographic pillars: China (Yangtze, the established core business), Europe (the new international flagship growth market, with a 4-ship fleet by 2028), and Egypt (Nile, planned launch in 2027, with a 5-ship fleet by 2029).

The expansion in Europe (starting 2026) is significant because Century is changing from a largely B2B/inbound Chinese model into a recognizable travel brand. The company spent decades building ships that were chartered to or sold through other cruise brands, while Century itself remained largely unknown to European consumers. Its current strategy is to capture the brand and customer relationship directly.

The company's management has discussed the possibility of entering ocean cruising in the longer term, particularly given the group's Egyptian/Red Sea exposure.

Company Ownership & Executives/Management Team

Century dates its river-cruise history to 1992, when its business as a travel agency started, and became a cruise operator with the launch of its first ship, Century Star, in 2003.

The initial company, Chongqing New Century Cruises Co Ltd (2011-listed in Shenzhen), completed a major reverse acquisition in 2016 involving Giant Network Group (2004-established, Shanghai-based online gaming company founded by Shi Yuzhu), whose core business is developing, operating, and publishing multiplayer online role-playing and mobile games. In 2016, Century's cruise assets were transferred to Peng Jianhu's side of the transaction.

Chongqing Gaund Century Cruises Ltd's current controlling entity is Chongqing Gaund Holding Group Co Ltd. Gaund is a diversified Chongqing-based group with interests beyond tourism, including technology/manufacturing and other investments. Century Cruises is a wholly owned/substantially controlled part of the group. Chongqing Gaund Century Cruises is now wholly owned by Gaund Holding.

Century Cruises Europe AG (registered in Basel in December 2025) is incorporated as an entity that specializes in organizing and selling travel, operating as a tour operator, organizing, marketing and promoting river cruises, chartering ships, establishing subsidiaries, and financing group companies. Century Cruises Europe's management team includes Jianhu Peng (President), Ye Hua (Board member), and Sebastien Augustin Roy (authorized signatory).

Century ONE GmbH (a Swiss-registered, April 2025-established company) is co-owned by Century Cruises Europe AG and STARLING FLEET Holding AG. Century ONE's management team includes Jianhu Peng (managing director/chairman), Alexander Nothegger (managing director) and Thomas Rooch (managing director).

Century TWO GmbH (a Swiss-registered, August 2026-established company) has the same core management architecture. This suggests a ship-by-ship/project-company structure is being developed for the European fleet.

The company's controlling shareholder is its founder, Jianhu Peng, who is also Chairman of Gaund Holding Group, of Century Cruises (worldwide), and of Century Cruises Europe AG.

Ye Hua, the VP of Gaund Holding (since 2018), previously served as VP of Chongqing Gaund Century Cruises (2011-2018) and as senior management at New Century Cruises (before that).

Alex Ye is the CEO of Century Cruises, particularly in connection with the European expansion.

Richard Xie is the Vice President of Century Cruises. He has specifically articulated the ambition to attract both Chinese and international tourists to Europe.

David Fredericks is the President & General Manager for the Americas. He joined Century Cruises in 2024 as SVP Sales & Marketing, and in October 2025 was promoted to President. His previous employers include major cruise companies like Carnival, Viking, Crystal, and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

Other top executives include Alexis McKinnon Puma (Global Sales & MICE Strategist) and Ralph Monteleone (VP, Century Air, responsible for flight/transport/hotel/land programs in the Americas and Europe).

Assets and Industrial Capabilities

Century is more vertically integrated than a typical small river-cruise line. Its asset base includes cruise vessels (the core physical asset is the Yangtze fleet), vessel design/architecture/construction capability (Century supplies its own design/construction teams and retains its own management throughout newbuild projects), technology (the group has invested heavily in electric and hybrid propulsion, integrated rudder-propeller systems, energy-management systems, low-emission and smart/green ship technologies), and manufacturing/industrial interests.

Except for tourism, Gaund has interests in manufacturing and technology, including battery-related and shipyard investments.

In June 2025, Century acquired a 70% stake in Sunrise Resorts & Cruises and has also invested in Egyptian shipyard infrastructure. Sunrise operates luxury Nile vessels and has important docking rights.

Fleets

The company's current Yangtze fleet includes the large ships Century Vision (launched September 2026), Century Voyage (September 2024), Century Oasis (April 2023), Century Victory (March 2022), Century Glory (September 2019), and Century Legend (May 2013). Century Paragon (2013-launched sister ship to Century Legend) has been officially retired from service for 2026, with no scheduled sailings.

The European fleet includes Century Star (June 2026) and Century Diamond (August 2027). By 2028, two more European riverboats are scheduled for inauguration, and after 2028, major itinerary expansions are planned.

The Nile fleet (part of the Sunrise Resorts & Cruises fleet) includes MS Terramar (December 2024).

Century's European riverboats are newbuilds constructed by Concordia Damen. Each ship carries 174 passengers in 78 cabins, has an LOA of 135 m (443 ft) and uses hybrid propulsion and ~60% recycled steel. The first ship (Century Star, on the Danube) was launched in June 2026. The second ship (Century Diamond, on the Rhine) is scheduled for August 2027. Four ships are currently planned for operations on European inland waterways by 2028.

Source Markets and European Product Strategy

Century Cruises didn't approach Europe as a purely Chinese outbound product, targeting both international and Chinese travelers who are increasingly traveling internationally.

The newbuild European boats were specifically designed for North American and European travelers, with European cultural references deliberately incorporated throughout the ships.

Century is trying to avoid positioning itself as an inexpensive newcomer. Its intended river-cruise product is premium/luxury, but with a different value proposition from established European brands, with the core proposition being "East meets West." Century's product combines European destinations and culinary identity with Chinese hospitality and cultural references, wellness elements (such as Tai Chi/yoga), modern amenities and technologies, relatively high public-space standards, a small-ship atmosphere, and 7- and 14-night (B2B) cruise itineraries.

Century Cruises has historically competed on a combination of high service levels and relatively attractive pricing. Its international sales strategy has included removing non-commissionable fares and offering aggressive travel-agent commissions. This allowed the company to enter the European market somewhat below the top end of the luxury pricing spectrum while maintaining a luxury physical product.

Century Cruises' main competitors on the extremely mature European market are Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Uniworld, Scenic, Emerald, Riviera Travel (UK), Tauck (USA), CroisiEurope (France), A-ROSA (UK), Phoenix Reisen (Germany) and Mystic's Nicko Cruises (Germany).

Partnerships

Century Cruises has made travel advisors a major strategic channel. In 2025, it became a preferred partner of Ensemble, gaining access to its luxury travel-advisor network. Century simultaneously removed non-commissionable fares and implemented stronger CRS/API integration.

Century's North American office (opened in 2025) manages sales, reservations, marketing, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions), and customer service. This division allows it to compete with major international brands like Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Uniworld, Scenic, Tauck, and others.

In July 2025, Century partnered with eGroup Communications to enter the global MICE market, including the X-Change event series. This was particularly relevant for Europe because European riverboats are well suited to large group events and VIP customers, including incentive groups, corporate meetings, association events, multigenerational groups, and private charters.

Also in July 2025, a partnership was signed with United Waterways AG to manage Century's European operations and infrastructure. United Waterways' role includes helping Century with EU operating requirements, infrastructure, regulatory compliance, safety management, crewing, and hospitality standards.

Another July 2025-signed partnership was with Concordia Damen. The Dutch shipbuilder gives Century a European technical platform and helps with EU regulatory compliance, river dimensions, ship design, supply chains, and sustainability requirements.

For Century Cruises' European boats, MDesigns- a Dutch design company- was contracted to develop the ships' interior design.

Century is also in partnerships with Viking (North American distribution for Yangtze cruises), eGroup Communications (MICE/incentive market), Versonix (CRS/technology/international distribution infrastructure), Sunrise Resorts & Cruises (Egypt/Nile platform), and Gaund Holding (parent company/industrial infrastructure).

The next table shows Century Cruises' main and currently published itineraries on the Yangtze (China), Danube and Rhine (Europe) and Nile (Egypt).

Century's Yangtze program includes short "Three Gorges" cruises, longer Shanghai-Chongqing voyages, and extended China cruisetour itineraries that combine the Yangtze cruising with major land destinations.

Century's European schedule currently lists destinations along the Danube and Rhine.

The Nile program is scheduled to launch in 2028.

Regional Summary

Century's website currently confirms the core 3-night downstream, 4-night upstream, 10-night downstream and 11-night upstream itineraries. It also lists the longer cruise tours titled "Legend of China", "Imperial China & Vietnam", "Imperial China & Japan", and "Dream of China".

Note: Century's European operations started with Century Star (on the Danube) in September, and the Rhine program followed in November 2026. Century Star's inaugural cruise schedule listed the 8-day itineraries "Blue Danube", "Romantic Rhine", and "Christmas Rhine", and the 15-day itineraries "Blue Danube" (roundtrip) and "Castles & Storybook Cities" (B2B/combination).

Century's officially announced two Nile itineraries for 2028 are "Treasures of the Nile" (11 days) and "Legends of Egypt" (15 days). The cruising part (on the 20-cabin ship MS Terramar) can be combined in a 15-day cruisetour adding a 4-day land extension in Hurghada on the Red Sea.
