Review of Transcend Cruises
Transcend Cruises Inc is a 2022-founded, USA-based (Miami-headquartered) river cruise shipowner and travel brand. As a cruise company/brand, Transcend Cruises was launched in 2024 with its first operating vessel, Transcend Advance (2017-built as Crystal Mahler, now SS Elisabeth). Unlike the following newbuild riverboats, Transcend Advance was a chartered (from Riverside Luxury Cruises) vessel.
Transcend Cruises owns and operates/charters a fleet of 5-star-rated vessels. Transcend Connect was delivered in July and inaugurated in August 2026. Currently, the company has three additional ships of the same design: one under construction - Transcend Evolve (scheduled for May 2027) and two additional ships on order - Transcend Create (October 2027) and Transcend Engage (2028 Q1). Transcend's long-term fleet expansion plans call for up to 12 vessels.
Transcend effectively realized the idea of turning a large modern river cruise ship into a customizable venue available for exclusive use by private chartering groups. The company's market positioning is B2B (business-to-business) hospitality, full-ship cruise charters to clients offering group travel products.
In July 2022, Matthew Shollar (the company's Founder) announced that they had already sold US$20 million of product ahead of the official launch (2024). The announcement mentioned that Transcend will order two custom-designed (yacht-inspired) vessels targeting the charter cruise market exclusively.
According to Matthew Shollar, Transcend Cruises planned a fleet of 8 boats operational by 2027.

Among the potential charter clients are MICE companies specializing in affinity marketing, tour operators, travel agencies, MICE planners (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions), and private groups (college alumni, sponsored media travel, wellness-themed events, private parties/family buyouts, reunions, birthdays, celebrations, team building, name-brand presentations and promotions).
The riverboat's booking window (for short- and long-term charters) is between 1 and 3 years.
Transcend's operations started in August 2023 with Transcend Advance (Crystal Mahler) chartered from Riverside Luxury Cruises. The boat, operated on the Rhine and Moselle, had 20+ charters during 2023.
Transcend ship names Connect and Evolve were announced in April 2025.
Transcend ship names Create and Engage were announced in March 2026.
Corporate structure and leadership team
Transcend Cruises Inc is an independent, privately financed, Delaware-registered cruise startup.
The company's leadership team includes Hans Rood (CEO/Chief Executive Officer), Matthew Shollar (CVO/Chief Visionary Officer), Andy McKey (CFO/Chie Financial Officer), Kimberly Daley (CRO/Chief Revenue Officer), Carmen Mladenovic (Ship Operations Manager), Gregg Marston (Board Member). Key employees include Tom Markwell (Affinity and Special Interest Travel), Jackie Coulson (Tour Operators, Leisure Travel Agencies, Meetings and Events), Sean Mahoney (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events).
The group of executives and investors serving as the company's Chairmen of the Board includes Harsha V. Agadi (Chairman and CEO of GHS Holdings LLC, an investing and restaurant consulting business) and Shawn Horwitz (co-founder and sole owner of The Alliant Company (TAC), a real estate and tax credit syndication firm managing US$16+ billion in assets, 2021-acquired by Walker & Dunlop).
Business model
Transcend's strongest proposition is its B2B-only distribution. While other river cruise companies sell individual cabins, allowing groups to charter part of or the entire ship, which is generally designed for individual cruisers.
For Transcend Cruises, the group is the customer, while the boat is the product. Potential ship charterers include: incentive houses, corporate meeting planners, tour operators and travel brands/agencies, affinity groups (sports, alumni, cultural, religious, LGBTQ+, culinary and other organizations), associations, VIP and private clients (destination weddings, celebrations, reunions).
Transcend doesn't sell retail cruises to individuals.
A large river cruiser provides capacity for 150-190 guests, with several venues and shore excursion programs designed around a 7-night itinerary. Transcend's ships accommodate 60 to 120 passengers, and their public spaces are designed around group programming. This results in a lower-density product with high flexibility.
The vessels are designed as floating event venues, with each boat containing five venues with capacity to accommodate the entire group. Among the signature shipboard venues are the Forum (a 2-deck amphitheater/lecture hall) and the Studio (for group meetings and special events).
The ships also incorporate expansive wellness facilities, flexible meeting spaces, and stateroom configurations, which allows it to be individually branded and programmed around the charterer.
Transcend promotes customized river cruise itineraries (with flexible port combinations), dining and entertainment, customizable ship branding, and event programming.
Transcend's ships
In August 2024, for the cruise ship interior design was contracted TDoS (Tillberg Design of Sweden/1964-founded, Hoganas-based company).
Each vessel is fitted with a battery pack used for peak shaving and close-in maneuvering. Transcend ships are equipped with advanced technologies, including digital signage boards, customizable lighting, and professional audio/video systems.
On April 7, 2024, Transcend signed the order for the first ship (Connect) with the family-owned Dutch shipbuilder Scheepswerf Den Breejen Shipyard (Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Holland). The documents were signed by both companies' CEOs - Hans Rood (Transcend Cruises) and Peter Burger (Den Breejen Shipyard).
RensenDriessen Shipbuilding BV (1980-founded, Zwijndrecht-based) was contracted for the vessels' brokerage.
Following the assembly in Romania, each vessel is towed up the Danube River and along the Rhine to the Netherlands (Den Breejen's yard) to complete its interior construction and outfitting.
Transcend ship's 60 identical cabins (of the same design and size) have interconnecting doors. Two adjoining cabins can be converted into a two-room Suite with a separate bedroom and living room, and two bathrooms.
This accommodation concept allows the charterer to configure the ship for either 120 guests (60 cabins) or 60 guests (30 suites). The lower-density option gives Transcend Cruises a unique position in the ultra-luxury (private yacht-style) group travel market, allowing the client to provide a premium cruise experience without chartering a larger ship.

Transcend Cruises-Lindblad Expeditions
The long-term charter agreement between Transcend Cruises and Lindblad Expeditions was signed on May 6th, 2025. The exclusive partnership runs through at least 2028 and involves the ships Connect and Evolve.
Shipboard experiences feature lectures and presentations by National Geographic experts, renowned historians, and customized wellness programming.
The agreement was significant because Lindblad chartered Transcend Connect for its first European river cruise itinerary program.
Lindblad's 2026 schedule listed two 7-night/8-day Rhine itineraries:
- "Rhine: Castles, Culture & Culinary Delights" from Cologne to Basel, visiting Mainz, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, and Kehl/Strasbourg.
- "Holland & Belgium: Medieval History & Scenic Waterways" from Amsterdam to Brussels, visiting Kampen/Giethoorn, Arnhem, Rotterdam, The Hague/Delft, Kinderdijk, Ghent, and Antwerp.
The Rhine route runs through the Middle Rhine/Rhine Gorge and into Switzerland.
Signature shore excursions include Rhine Gorge (scenic cruising), Rheinstein Castle (exclusive champagne reception hosted by the castle's lord), Rudesheim (walking tour of the historic downtown, including St Hildegard Abbey, with a private Riesling wine tasting hosted by the nuns, visiting Drosselgasse and Market Square), Mainz/Bingen (town tours), Frankfurt (private visit to Goethe's home), Heidelberg/Mannheim (historic downtown, dining at a local brewery with university students), Kehl/Strasbourg (historic Strasbourg and Alsace culture, a private wine tasting), Breisach (choice between Alsace and Schwarzwald/Black Forest), Ribeauville/Colmar (guided wine tasting and a traditional lunch in Colmar), Lake Titisee (alternative to Alsace: bus tour to Lake Titisee, local lunch, boat ride and a traditional cuckoo-clock workshop demonstration).
The Holland/Belgium route is more diverse, using the Dutch inland waterways and the Rhine Delta.
Shore excursions include Brussels (historic downtown), Antwerp (Royal Museum of Fine Arts and Flemish Art, or Antwerp's Jewish heritage, both followed by a progressive food tour featuring fries, waffles and chocolate, and beer tasting), Delft (historic downtown, with emphasis on Dutch art, ceramics and Golden Age heritage), Kinderdijk (traditional windmills and Holland's water-management history), Arnhem (access to the surrounding cultural and historical sites), Giethoorn (canals and village landscape), Kampen (historic downtown, emphasizing medieval architecture and river trading history), Amsterdam (canal cruising and independent explorastion time, with optional 2-day extension for visiting Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt House, Hoorn, and Enkhuizen/steam railway).
