National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has entered the European river-cruise market with the departure of its first expedition voyage, the Holland and Belgium: Medieval History and Scenic Waterways itinerary, which began on August 15th, 2026. The programme introduces the company’s expedition model to Europe’s inland waterways aboard the 120-guest Transcend Connect.

The voyage follows the Rhine and other waterways through the Netherlands and Belgium, combining visits to historic cities with exploration of the region’s cultural and natural landscapes. The itinerary includes Amsterdam’s canals and calls at Antwerp and Delft, alongside excursions focused on European art, Jewish heritage, local cuisine and the Dutch countryside.

The expedition programme is supported by an Expedition Leader, Field Staff and, during the inaugural season, at least one National Geographic Expedition Expert. The team provides guests with guided visits, private tours, tastings and other destination-focused activities designed around the history and culture of the region.

Built in 2025, Transcend Connect is a new-generation European river ship featuring wraparound panoramic windows, contemporary accommodation and technology designed for river operations. The vessel is intended to operate on waterways in Germany, France, the Netherlands and other European destinations while maintaining the expedition-focused character of the new programme.

Lindblad Expeditions Chief Expedition Officer Trey Byus said the inaugural sailing represented the beginning of the company’s expansion into European waterways. He noted that the new programme would allow the operator to apply its established expedition approach to destinations across the continent.

The European programme will continue in September with Rhine River: Castles, Culture and Culinary Delights, also aboard Transcend Connect. The itinerary will follow the Rhine Gorge, with its vineyards and historic landscapes, before calling at cities including Mainz, Frankfurt and Heidelberg in Germany and Strasbourg and Colmar in France’s Alsace region.

The expansion will continue in 2027 with the introduction of Evolve, a sister ship to Transcend Connect. The vessel will operate Christmas Market itineraries, effectively doubling National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions’ European river offering and extending its expedition programme into the winter season.
