Hilton Head Island has a rich history which started thousands of years ago with seasonal occupation by Native Americans, and continued with European exploration and Sea Island Cotton trade. During the Civil War, Hilton Head became a major base of operations for Union blockade of Southern ports. Once it fell to Union troops, a wealth of ex-slaves flocked to the island, which is still home to a lot of "native islanders", of whom many are descendants of freed slaves (Gullah or Geechee) who managed to hold on much of their cultural and ethnic identity.
Hilton Head offers a large number of cultural opportunities for a community of its size, including the largest annual tented wine tasting event on the east coast, Broadway-quality plays at Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, 120-member full chorus of Hilton Head Choral Society, highly rated Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, as well as several other annual festivals. Hilton Head Island also hosts Heritage Golf Classic, PGA Tour tournament played on Harbour Town Golf Links, Sea Pines Resort.
