Maastricht is a city and municipality located in the southeast of the Netherlands. It's the capital city of Limburg province. Maastricht lies on both sides of Meuse river, at the point where Jeker River joins it. The total municipality area of Maastricht is 60.03 km2 (23.18 ml2), and its population consists of 121,900 inhabitants (2014 census).
Maastricht city quickly developed from a Roman settlement to Medieval religious centre, garrison an early industrial city. Nowadays, it is well-regarded as a prosperous cultural center. Maastricht boasts a total of 1677 national heritage sites, which is the 2nd highest number (after Amsterdam) in a Dutch town. It has become known, by way of Maastricht Treaty, as the birthplace of European Union and the European currency, the euro. Maastricht is popular with tourists for recreation and shopping, and has a growing international student population. The city is part of Meuse-Rhine Euroregion, including nearby cities Eupen, Aachen, Hasselt, Liege and Tongeren. It is also a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network.
Maastricht is famous in the Netherlands and beyond for its historical buildings, narrow streets and lively squares. The entire city centre is a "beschermd stadsgezicht" (protected cityscape). The tourist information office (VVV) is in Dinghuis, medieval building that overlooks Grote Staat.
Maastricht has its river port (Beatrixhaven). It is connected with Belgium and the rest of Netherlands by water via the river Meuse, Juliana Canal, Albert Canal and Zuid-Willemsvaart. No regular boat connections are available to other cities, but a variety of organized boat trips for tourists link Maastricht with Belgium cities like Liege.
