Nosy Be (also Nossi-bé, Nosse Be) is an island situated off the northwest coast of Madagascar. It is Madagascar's busiest and largest tourist resort, with an area of 320.02 km2 (123.56 ml2) and a population of around 73,000 (2013 census). The main town on the island is Andoany (former Hellville).
Nosy Be is translated as "big island" in Malagasy language. During the early colonial era of 17th century Nosy Be Island was called "Assada". It has been given a few nicknames over the centuries, one of which is "Nosy Manitra" (meaning "The Scented Island").
Once an important location of sugar cane plantation and production of island's derived products (rum, sugar), the main activities on Nosy Be Island are currently the plantation of Ylang Ylang (for producing essential oils) and tourism. The island of Nosy Be is Madagascar's most developed tourism destination. Nosy Be is the only place in Madagascar with all-inclusive large resorts.
Nosy Be Island is popular with one of the smallest frogs and chameleon (Stumpffia pygmaea and Brookesia minima) in the world. Lokobe Reserve is one of the 5 Strict Nature Reserves (Réserves Naturelles Intégrales) on Madagascar. The island of Nosy Be is also home to "Furcifer pardalis" - specific color of panther chameleon.
Recent studies indicate that waters around the channel between Madagascar and Nosy Be Island host a habitat for noteworthy number of Omura's whale. This allowed researchers to conduct studies targeting for the first time this very rare, one of the least known species.
Nosy Be Island is served by Fascene Airport which has direct flights from Europe on Air Madagascar, Air Italy and Corsairfly.
