Oltenita is a Danube River cruise port in Romania. The city is located on the Arges River's left bank, across the Bulgarian town Tutrakan. A Neolithic settlement from the 4th millennium BC was revealed during excavations near Oltenita city (on the Gumelnita hill). Currently, Oltenita has a population of around 24,820 inhabitants (2011 census).
The first mention of a town named Oltenita was in 1515. Here the Ottomans attempted to cross Danube during the Crimean War (1853–1856) inflicting heavy losses on the Russians. During the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), Oltenita was an important point for Romanian troops crossing into Bulgaria to aid the Russian Army forces during the siege of Pleven. During WWI, the Oltenita's area was chosen by the allied Bulgarian-German troops for the invasion of Romania. The Romanian Army was defeated in the Battle of Turtucaia (September 2-6, 1916).
