- Various theories have been suggested as to the origin of the name "Preveza". In 1857, Panagiotis Aravantinos (1811-1870), one of the earliest historians of Epirus, suggested the Italian origin of the name, related to the word "prevesione", "supply".
- The present-time municipality of Preveza was established at 2011 local government reform via the merger of three former municipalities, which became municipal units.
- Port Preveza is connected by road to Igoumenitsa as well as to other coastal settlements via E55 national road. It is also linked with other Epirus' cities like Arta and Ioannina. Preveza also features a small passenger and commercial port and is served by nearby Aktion National Airport, also serving Lefkada Island.
