Lefkada Island is located in Ionian Sea (Eastern Mediterranean), off mainland Greece's west coast, to which is connected via long causeway and floating bridge. Island's principal town and municipality seat is Lefkada - located on the northern coast, approx 1 hour drive from Aktion Airport (aka Preveza Airport). The municipality covers Lefkada Island and the nearby smaller isles Kalamos and Kastos, with total area approx 336 km2 (130 ml2) and population around 23,000.
Lefkada Island has length 35 km (22 ml) north-south, and width 15 km (9 ml) east-west. Its highest point (Stavrota) is 1158 m (3799 ft) above sea level. The east coast is lined with the small resorts Nikiana, Perigiali and Lygia, all to north of Nidri/Nydri (island's primary ferry port and biggest town). Porto Katsiki beach is on the west coast.
Approx 20 km (12 ml) south of Nydri is Vasiliki (popular for windsurfing). Regularly scheduled ferries with daily crossings link Lefkada to Ithaca Island, Kefalonia Island, Paxos Island and mainland Greece (Igoumenitsa, Patras).
