From the little Propriano resort by the fine sands of the Gulf of Valinco cruisers can explore Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica, and the unspoilt scenery of the wild interior of Corsica. Corsica features an area of 3351 sq.miles (8680 sq. km). Its interior is mountainous, with the highest peak being Mount Cinto (8892 ft / 2710 m). The coast of Corsica is indented in the west and mostly rocky; in the east Aleria's coastal plain is dotted with swamps and lagoons. From the mountains descend plenty of short, torrential streams. The biggest rivers are Golo and Tavignano. Fought over by Roman, Greek, Byzantine, Saracen and Vandal, the Genoese ceded the isle to France in 1768. During the Napoleonic Wars and the French Revolution, the island was twice held by the British.
